US citizen detained near Nepal border
Cloud TV Desk: Indian security agencies have detained a United States citizen near the India-Nepal border after he was allegedly found attempting to cross without a valid passport or travel documents. The incident has raised security concerns, and authorities are now verifying his identity and travel history.
The man was intercepted by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near the Sonouli border in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district. According to officials, he was trying to enter Nepal through an unauthorized route. During the inspection, security personnel reportedly found that he was not carrying a passport, visa, or any other valid travel documents.
He was immediately taken into custody for questioning, and local police launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his presence in the border area.
The detained individual identified himself as Jordan Brown, a resident of California, United States. During questioning, he claimed that he had previously served in the United States Navy and had travelled to nearly 70 countries.
Authorities have not independently verified these claims. Officials are coordinating with relevant agencies to confirm his identity, nationality, and military background.
Preliminary reports suggest Brown may have entered India via Sri Lanka and had been staying in Goa before travelling north towards the Nepal border. Investigators are trying to determine how he entered India, why he was travelling without valid documents, and what his intended destination was.
Indian authorities have informed the US Embassy about the detention and are awaiting verification of his identity. Officials are also examining whether there are any security implications linked to the incident.
At this stage, no espionage or other criminal charges have been officially announced. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further updates after completing document verification and questioning.
