Rapido Cab Licence
Rapido has secured a five-year licence from the Karnataka State Transport Authority to operate cab services across the state, marking a significant expansion of the mobility platform’s operations in Karnataka.
The licence has been granted to Roppen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd, which operates the Rapido platform. It will remain valid until August 2031.
Rapido is widely known for its bike-taxi services, but the company has been steadily expanding its mobility offerings. The new regulatory approval gives it a formal framework to strengthen its four-wheeler cab business in one of India’s largest urban mobility markets.
Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru, is considered one of Rapido’s key markets. The company now plans to use the licence to further develop its cab operations while working with the government and transport authorities.
Rapido co-founder Pavan Guntupalli said Karnataka is one of the company’s most important markets. He said the new licence would help Rapido strengthen its cab services within a formal regulatory framework.
The company also said it intends to work with the government and transport department to provide safe, reliable and accessible mobility services.
The five-year validity of the licence is significant because it gives Rapido a longer regulatory horizon for its cab operations.
The company can now focus on expanding its fleet, improving its service network and increasing its presence in Karnataka’s rapidly growing app-based transport market.
Bengaluru is particularly important for such services because of its large working population, extensive traffic congestion and strong demand for app-based transportation.
The new licence could therefore allow Rapido to build a more diversified mobility business in the state.
According to figures shared by Rapido, the platform currently operates across 21 cities. It supports more than 3.1 lakh captains and has over 20 million registered customers.
These numbers underline the scale of the company’s existing mobility network.
The cab licence also reflects Rapido’s broader strategy of moving beyond its identity as a bike-taxi platform.
The company is seeking to establish itself as a comprehensive urban mobility provider with multiple transportation options.
For passengers, the expansion could potentially mean more choice in app-based cab services.
For drivers, the expansion could create additional opportunities to join Rapido’s cab network.
However, the actual impact will depend on the pace at which Rapido expands its four-wheeler fleet and the pricing and service model it adopts in Karnataka.
The development comes against the backdrop of regulatory uncertainty surrounding bike taxis in the state.
In June 2025, Karnataka authorities enforced a halt on bike-taxi operations following court proceedings. Rapido said it had paused its bike-taxi service and introduced a feature called “Bike Parcel”.
Authorities subsequently took action against some operators accused of continuing passenger services under parcel or courier labels.
The legal landscape changed again in January 2026, when the Karnataka High Court held that a blanket prohibition on issuing contract-carriage permits to motorcycles could not be considered a reasonable restriction under Article 19(6) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Against this background, securing a dedicated cab licence gives Rapido a clearer regulatory pathway for its four-wheeler business.
Rapido’s entry into the licensed cab segment could increase competition in Karnataka’s app-based mobility market.
Established platforms such as Ola and Uber already have a significant presence in Bengaluru and other major cities. Rapido’s expanding cab operation could give consumers another major platform to choose from.
Competition could also encourage platforms to focus more heavily on pricing, availability, driver incentives and customer experience.
For Rapido, however, the immediate priority will be execution.
The company will need to scale its cab fleet, maintain service quality and build a reliable network of drivers while operating within Karnataka’s regulatory framework.
The five-year licence provides the regulatory foundation for that expansion.
Rapido’s latest move also fits into a wider trend in India’s mobility sector, where companies are increasingly diversifying beyond a single mode of transport.
