Cloud TV Desk: Meta has come under government scrutiny after a Facebook video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the NEET issue was briefly removed from the platform. Although the company restored the video and apologised, the Indian government has summoned Meta’s Global Head of Public Policy to explain the incident.
The video, in which Prime Minister Modi addressed students and discussed the government’s response to the NEET controversy, disappeared from Facebook for a short period before being restored.
Meta said the removal happened due to a technical error and was not the result of any policy decision. The company apologised and reinstated the post soon after identifying the issue.
Despite the restoration, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has summoned Meta’s Global Head of Public Policy to seek an explanation.
Government sources indicated that Meta’s explanation is “not reasonable” and stressed that the issue remains under examination. Officials want to understand how a video posted from the Prime Minister’s verified account could be removed.
The incident has reignited debate over content moderation and platform accountability. Analysts say social media companies handling official government communications must maintain strong safeguards against erroneous removals.
Meta has reiterated that the takedown was accidental and that corrective measures have been taken. However, the government has signalled that the matter is not closed and expects greater accountability from the technology giant.
