Kolkata Bus Fare Revision
KOLKATA, India : Private bus operators in Kolkata are considering seeking a revision of passenger fares, saying rising fuel prices, maintenance expenses and operating costs have made it increasingly difficult to sustain services on several routes.
Representatives of private bus operators said many routes are running at a loss as the cost of diesel, spare parts, insurance, vehicle maintenance and employee wages has increased significantly in recent years. They argue that the current fare structure is no longer financially viable for many operators.
According to transport industry representatives, low passenger volumes on some routes, coupled with traffic congestion and higher operating expenses, have further reduced profitability. They say a fare revision is necessary to keep services running and prevent additional routes from shutting down.
Passenger groups, however, have expressed concern that any increase in fares would place an additional financial burden on daily commuters, particularly office workers, students and low-income households that rely heavily on private buses for transportation.
Transport officials have not announced any change to the existing fare structure. As of now, the West Bengal government has not issued any notification approving a fare increase.
The discussions come as Kolkata’s private bus sector continues to face financial pressure, with operators warning that prolonged losses could affect the availability of services across the city and its surrounding areas.
Any proposal for a fare revision is expected to require approval from the state government before implementation.
