India Australia Strategic Partnership
Cloud TV Desk: India and Australia have significantly expanded their strategic partnership by signing a series of agreements covering civil nuclear cooperation, maritime security, critical minerals, clean energy, and trade during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Australia.
The agreements mark another major step in strengthening bilateral ties as both countries seek closer cooperation in the Indo-Pacific amid evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.
One of the key outcomes of the visit was progress in implementing civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries.
Australia, which possesses some of the world’s largest uranium reserves, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India’s peaceful nuclear energy programme. The two sides agreed to accelerate cooperation in uranium supply and other areas of civilian nuclear energy, supporting India’s long-term objective of expanding its clean energy capacity.
The partnership is expected to contribute to India’s goal of significantly increasing nuclear power generation as part of its broader energy transition strategy.
Prime Minister Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also agreed to deepen cooperation on maritime security across the Indo-Pacific region.
The leaders discussed strengthening defence collaboration, improving maritime domain awareness, and ensuring a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
Critical minerals were another major focus of the talks. Both governments agreed to enhance cooperation in securing supply chains for minerals essential to electric vehicle batteries, semiconductors, renewable energy technologies, and advanced manufacturing.
The two countries also committed to expanding collaboration in green hydrogen, clean energy technologies, and sustainable infrastructure.
Economic cooperation featured prominently during the high-level discussions.
Both leaders expressed their commitment to accelerating negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to further boost bilateral trade and investment.
Prime Minister Modi described India and Australia as “natural and trusted partners” capable of working together to address global challenges through stronger economic and strategic cooperation.
Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that closer ties between the two democracies would contribute to regional stability, economic resilience, and long-term prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific.
Analysts believe the agreements send a strong signal about the growing importance of the India-Australia partnership at a time when supply chain resilience, energy security, and regional stability have become strategic priorities.
Beyond economic cooperation, the visit underscores the shared commitment of both nations to strengthening defence partnerships, diversifying critical mineral supply chains, and expanding collaboration in emerging technologies.
As India and Australia continue to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, the latest agreements are expected to play a significant role in shaping future economic growth, energy security, and strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
