Gen Z Protest
The success of recent Gen Z-led protests has sparked widespread discussion about the political and social voice of young people. However, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has now raised concerns over what he described as the misuse of the Gen Z identity during protests.
Abdullah shared a video on social media showing a young woman arguing with security personnel near a police checkpoint in Kashmir. In the video, the woman identifies herself as part of Gen Z and threatens to organise a protest.

The Chief Minister questioned whether the term ‘Gen Z’ was becoming a new way of asserting influence or issuing threats during minor disputes.
According to Abdullah, repeatedly using the identity in such situations could damage the reputation of an entire generation.
According to Kashmir Police sources, the video dates back to Kargil Vijay Diwas. The young woman was travelling from Drass towards Sonamarg when traffic was reportedly stopped due to security arrangements.
The situation became tense after a minister’s vehicle was allegedly allowed to pass while ordinary passengers remained stranded.
The young woman reportedly became angry over what she perceived as unequal treatment. Police sources said a large number of vehicles had remained stuck for several hours.
The woman then got out of her vehicle and gathered other passengers. She threatened to stage a protest and questioned why a minister’s vehicle was allowed to move while ordinary travellers were being stopped.
During the confrontation, she repeatedly referred to herself and others as Gen Z. The video subsequently circulated widely on social media.
The incident has triggered a debate over both the underlying grievance and the manner in which the protest was expressed.
Omar Abdullah’s criticism was directed primarily at the use of the Gen Z label as a form of intimidation or disruption.
He argued that the recent Gen Z protests have created a significant public impression of young people as an active and influential force. According to him, that reputation should not be undermined by turning the term into a slogan for every minor confrontation.
At the same time, the incident has raised a separate question about preferential treatment for public figures during security restrictions.
If ordinary travellers were kept waiting for several hours while a minister’s vehicle was permitted to pass, the circumstances naturally raise questions about equal treatment.
The controversy therefore has two distinct aspects: the legitimacy of the woman’s grievance and the manner in which she expressed it.
Omar Abdullah’s intervention has brought the issue into the wider national discussion surrounding Gen Z activism, protest culture and the responsibilities that come with public dissent.
