The 44-year-old rider, a resident of Dhakuria in Kolkata, lost her life while returning from a weekend motorcycle tour. Her husband, who was riding with her, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
According to police, Debahuti was part of a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who had travelled to Chandipur in Odisha for a weekend ride. While returning to Kolkata on Sunday, their motorcycle met with an accident on National Highway 16 near Balihati under Kharagpur Local Police Station limits.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the motorcycle lost balance after hitting a large pothole on the highway, causing both riders to be thrown off the bike. Local residents rushed to the spot and helped shift the injured couple to a nearby hospital. Doctors later declared Debahuti Banerjee dead, while her husband continues to receive medical care.
Debahuti Banerjee was known among motorcycle enthusiasts for promoting long-distance touring and encouraging more women to take up motorcycling. Although she worked in the private sector, riding motorcycles was her greatest passion. She regularly participated in group expeditions across India and inspired many women to embrace adventure riding.
