A 54-year-old woman died outside the gates of Bangaon Sub-Divisional Hospital in West Bengal after her family allegedly claimed that she was not admitted because she did not have her Aadhaar card with her.

The deceased, identified as Renu Mondal, had reportedly gone to the hospital with her elder sister after complaining of chest pain. According to the family, doctors at the emergency department examined her and advised admission. However, when they went to the ward, hospital staff allegedly asked for her Aadhaar card.

The family claims that since the document was not available at the time, Renu was not admitted to the ward.

The hospital, however, has denied that emergency treatment was withheld because of the missing document. A doctor from the hospital said Renu had been treated in the emergency department and was sent to the ward with a treatment sheet, with instructions to bring the Aadhaar card later.

Woman Dies Outside Hospital Gate

Renu Mondal was a resident of the Kalyani Khedapara area under Petrapole police station. She reportedly had no children.

After the alleged difficulty with the admission process, Renu and her sister left the hospital to bring her Aadhaar card. But her condition deteriorated rapidly.

According to the family, Renu was so unwell that she had to sit down near the hospital gate. She subsequently became unconscious.

She was taken back inside the hospital, where doctors examined her and declared her dead.

The incident has raised questions about the treatment and admission of critically ill patients, particularly whether documentation requirements can delay or prevent admission in an emergency situation.

Family Questions Admission Process

The family has raised several questions over the incident. If Renu had already been examined in the emergency department and was being sent to a ward for admission, why was she allowed to leave the hospital in such poor health?

The family also wants to know whether the absence of an Aadhaar card played a role in delaying her admission and whether adequate medical supervision was provided while the admission process was underway.

Hospital Says Aadhaar Could Be Submitted Later

Bangaon Sub-Divisional Hospital emergency department doctor Gauri Mondal gave a different account.

According to the doctor, Renu was brought to the emergency department by her sister and received medical treatment there. She was subsequently given a treatment sheet and sent to the upper ward for admission.

The doctor said the family had been told that the Aadhaar card could be brought later. She maintained that emergency patients are treated first and that required documents can subsequently be submitted.

The doctor also said the emergency department could not explain why Renu and her sister left the hospital instead of completing the admission process in the ward.

The incident has nevertheless sparked concern over the hospital’s admission procedures and the handling of seriously ill patients. Questions remain over the exact sequence of events, the role of the Aadhaar card in the admission process and why Renu ended up outside the hospital in a critical condition.
