N S Raja Subramani
Cloud TV Desk: India is set to appoint Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), one of the most important military positions in the nation’s defence structure. He will succeed General Anil Chauhan after the latter completes his tenure later this month. The appointment was officially announced by the Defence Ministry on Saturday.
With nearly four decades of military experience, Raja Subramani is regarded as one of India’s most experienced Army officers, having served in counter-insurgency operations, strategic border deployments and key leadership roles across the country.
Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani belongs to Tamil Nadu and joined the Indian Army in 1985. He was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. Throughout his long military career, he has held several key command, operational and staff positions across India.He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA). He also underwent advanced military education at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi.
In addition, he holds a postgraduate degree from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.
One of the major highlights of Raja Subramani’s military career was his role in Operation Rhino, the Indian Army’s anti-insurgency campaign in Assam. He commanded the 16 Garhwal Rifles during critical operations in the Northeast. He also served extensively in Jammu and Kashmir, including leadership responsibilities in counter-terror and strategic deployment operations along India’s northern borders.
Raja Subramani commanded the 168 Infantry Brigade and later led the prestigious II Corps, one of the Indian Army’s most strategically important strike formations on the western front.
Military experts describe him as an officer with deep operational knowledge of both conventional warfare and counter-insurgency strategy. Before being selected as CDS, Raja Subramani served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff. He also headed the Army’s Central Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C).
He is currently serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat.
As CDS, he will also function as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, making him one of the most influential officials in India’s national security framework. The Chief of Defence Staff is the highest-ranking military officer responsible for coordination among the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
The position was created in 2019 to improve joint planning, integration and strategic coordination between the three services. India is currently moving towards a “theatre command” structure, which aims to integrate the armed forces under unified operational commands. Defence analysts believe Raja Subramani will play a major role in accelerating that transformation.
