Agni-5 missile test
Cloud TV Desk: India has successfully conducted the flight test of an advanced variant of the Agni-V missile equipped with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) technology, marking a major milestone in the country’s strategic defence (Agni-5 missile test) capabilities.The missile was successfully tested from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast on Friday, according to the Defence Ministry. The advanced Agni missile was capable of deploying multiple payloads aimed at different targets spread across the Indian Ocean region.
The successful trial significantly strengthens India’s nuclear deterrence and places the country among a small group of nations possessing advanced MIRV missile technology. The most important feature of the advanced Agni-5 missile is its MIRV capability — Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle. This technology allows a single ballistic missile to carry several warheads, each capable of striking different targets independently after re-entering the atmosphere.
In practical terms, one missile can simultaneously attack multiple enemy targets spread over a large geographical area. Defence analysts say this makes interception significantly more difficult for enemy missile defence systems. The Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile carried multiple payloads during the test and successfully engaged different targets in the Indian Ocean region.
Agni-V is among India’s most advanced long-range ballistic missiles, with an officially declared strike range of more than 5,000 kilometres.The missile uses a three-stage solid-fuel propulsion system and is designed for high mobility and rapid deployment.
Strategic experts believe the missile significantly enhances India’s “credible minimum deterrence” capability, especially in the context of evolving regional security challenges involving China and Pakistan.India had earlier demonstrated MIRV capability during the “Mission Divyastra” test in 2024, but the latest successful trial further validates the operational maturity of the technology.
According to official statements, the missile was launched from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island on the Odisha coast.Multiple ground-based and ship-based tracking systems monitored the missile’s trajectory from launch to payload impact. Flight data reportedly confirmed that all mission objectives were successfully achieved.
The trial was witnessed by senior scientists from DRDO and personnel from the Indian Army.
Following the successful test, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists, the Indian Army and industry partners involved in the project.He said the successful test would “add an incredible capability” to India’s defence preparedness amid growing security threats.
Military analysts say MIRV-equipped missiles are considered one of the most advanced strategic weapons systems in the world because they dramatically increase offensive flexibility and survivability.
With this successful test, India joins a select group of countries possessing operational MIRV technology, including the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom.
Experts also believe the test signals India’s growing emphasis on strengthening long-range strategic deterrence and modernising its missile systems in response to changing geopolitical realities.
