Cloud TV Desk: In a major boost to industrial development in West Bengal, Shyam Steel Group has laid the foundation stone for its ₹15,000-crore integrated steel plant at Mejia in Bankura district. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, senior government officials, and top executives of the company.

The project is being hailed as one of the largest industrial investments in the state in recent years and is expected to strengthen West Bengal’s position as a key manufacturing hub.

₹15,000 Crore Investment to Expand Steel Production

According to Shyam Steel, the existing facility at Mejia will be upgraded in phases into a 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant. The first phase will increase production capacity to 1 MTPA before the project reaches its full planned capacity.

The company said the expansion will involve a total investment of approximately ₹15,000 crore, making it one of the biggest private-sector industrial projects currently underway in West Bengal.

Thousands of Employment Opportunities Expected

The state government said the project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs during both the construction and operational phases.

Apart from employment within the plant, the investment is also expected to benefit transportation, logistics, engineering services, construction, and small and medium enterprises linked to the steel industry.

Industry experts believe the project could significantly boost economic activity in Bankura and surrounding districts.

Government Highlights Investor-Friendly Environment

Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said West Bengal has created an investor-friendly business environment by ensuring faster approvals, transparent governance, and improved industrial infrastructure.

He stated that the government is committed to attracting large-scale investments and positioning the state as a preferred destination for manufacturing industries.

Company Eyes Future Expansion

Shyam Steel also announced plans to explore investments in sectors such as defence manufacturing, infrastructure components, and aerospace engineering in the future.

Company officials said they look forward to continued cooperation with the state government for infrastructure development and long-term industrial expansion.

A Significant Milestone for West Bengal

Analysts believe the Bankura project marks an important milestone in West Bengal’s industrial growth strategy.

Beyond increasing steel production capacity, the integrated plant is expected to attract ancillary industries, improve regional infrastructure, and create long-term economic opportunities for the state.

With one of the largest industrial investments announced in recent years, the project is expected to play a key role in strengthening West Bengal’s manufacturing ecosystem.
