Cloud TV India Desk :The controversy surrounding E20 ethanol-blended petrol has intensified after political analyst and social activist Tehseen Poonawalla challenged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to a live public meeting over allegations that the fuel has damaged vehicles.
The development comes after Gadkari dismissed concerns over E20 fuel, saying that critics should present even a single vehicle that had suffered damage because of ethanol-blended petrol. Responding to the challenge, Poonawalla claimed he could produce six vehicle owners who allegedly experienced engine and performance issues after using E20 fuel.
In a public statement, Poonawalla requested a live meeting with Gadkari, proposing that the discussion be broadcast publicly to ensure transparency. He said the affected vehicle owners should be allowed to present their experiences directly before the Union Minister.
According to Poonawalla, several motorists have complained of reduced fuel efficiency, engine performance issues and mechanical problems after switching to E20 petrol. He argues that these concerns deserve an open and evidence-based discussion.
Nitin Gadkari has repeatedly defended India’s ethanol-blending programme, maintaining that E20 petrol is safe for compatible vehicles and plays a vital role in reducing crude oil imports, cutting carbon emissions and increasing farmers’ income through higher ethanol production.
The minister has challenged critics to provide concrete evidence that E20 petrol has caused damage to vehicles, insisting that verified complaints would be investigated.
The Indian government has been steadily expanding the use of ethanol-blended fuel as part of its clean energy strategy. However, some vehicle owners and consumer groups have raised concerns about the impact of E20 petrol on older vehicles that may not have been designed for higher ethanol blends.
Automobile experts say the effects of E20 fuel largely depend on whether a vehicle is certified as E20-compatible. Modern vehicles manufactured to support E20 are generally expected to operate safely, while owners of older models are advised to follow manufacturer recommendations.
As the debate gains political and public attention, all eyes are now on whether Gadkari accepts Poonawalla’s proposal for a live discussion. The outcome could influence public confidence in India’s ethanol-blending programme and shape future policy discussions.
