Suvendu Cabinet Agnimitra Sharadwat
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has advised two ministers to focus more closely on their respective departments instead of showing excessive activity on the streets, according to government sources.
The advice was reportedly given during the state Cabinet meeting at Nabanna on Wednesday. The two ministers identified by the sources are Agnimitra Paul and Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay.
Agnimitra Paul has recently been seen taking an active role in several civic and administrative issues on the streets.
She has intervened in matters involving alleged footpath encroachments, road safety and problems in markets. Videos of some of these interactions have circulated on social media.
On different occasions, Paul was seen engaging with vegetable vendors and members of the public. She was also seen using a microphone to issue warnings related to road safety.
Another video showed her speaking to vendors over bicycles being kept inside a market. Her interactions with people living on footpaths have also attracted attention.
Against this backdrop, government sources claim that the Chief Minister advised her to concentrate more on the work of her department.
Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay has also been active in recent weeks, particularly through surprise inspections of government hospitals and direct interactions with citizens.
He has visited government healthcare facilities to assess services and infrastructure. His involvement in monitoring the health department has also been reported previously.
On Wednesday, a public exchange involving Sharadwat and BJP MLA Piyush Kanoria reportedly took place during Sharadwat’s constituency programme in Bidhannagar. Kanoria represents the neighbouring Rajarhat-New Town constituency.
According to government sources, the incident was followed by advice from the Chief Minister for Sharadwat, along with Agnimitra Paul, to remain more focused on departmental responsibilities.
The Cabinet meeting also focused on recruitment-related issues across government departments.
According to sources, the Chief Minister instructed ministers to resolve recruitment-related problems department by department and ensure that vacancies are filled so that government services can reach people more efficiently.
The proposed recruitment of 2,000 personnel for Kolkata Police and 6,000 for the state police was also discussed, according to the information provided. The recruitment matter is currently subject to judicial proceedings.
The Chief Minister also instructed ministers to ensure that budget allocations are used according to clearly defined plans.
Sources said ministers were cautioned that inadequate utilisation of allocated funds could create difficulties while distributing funds in subsequent budgets.
