The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s food safety department carried out an inspection at Gariahat Market on Monday, checking fish and meat shops (Gariahat Market food safety raid) for compliance with food safety and quality standards.

The inspection began soon after traders opened their shops for the day. During the visit to meat shops, officials found a large quantity of packaged frozen chicken and mutton stored in crates. The meat was seized and subsequently disposed of after being rendered unfit for consumption.

At the same time, food safety officials collected fish samples from shops across the market for laboratory testing.

Large quantity of frozen meat seized

The food safety officials first inspected the meat shops at Gariahat Market. While checking crates used to store raw materials, they reportedly found large quantities of packaged frozen chicken and mutton.

The meat was immediately seized. Officials then made the seized stock unfit for further use before transporting it away in a municipal vehicle for disposal.

The action has once again brought attention to the importance of proper storage, handling and maintenance of food safety standards in markets selling raw meat.

Fish samples collected from every shop

The inspection also covered the fish section of Gariahat Market. Officials visited the fish shops one after another and collected samples to assess the quality of the products being sold.

The samples were reportedly collected along with the names and signatures of the respective traders. They will be sent to a laboratory for testing, with the results expected to determine whether further action is required.

Officials followed the same sampling procedure across the market.

Food safety inspections intensify

The Gariahat operation comes amid a wider food safety drive across Kolkata and other parts of the state. Food safety teams have been conducting inspections at hotels, restaurants, sweet shops and manufacturing units producing items such as bread and milk.

The latest focus has also shifted to raw fish and meat, with authorities examining the quality, storage and handling practices followed by traders.

For consumers, the inspections highlight the importance of food safety standards in retail markets, particularly when it comes to perishable products such as fish, chicken and mutton.

The laboratory results of the fish samples collected from Gariahat Market will determine whether any further action is required against individual shops. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring food quality and hygiene standards in markets across the city.
