Chingrighata flyover bike skid
Paint has been removed from the Chingrighata flyover after several bikes skidded one after another on its rain-soaked surface. Special blocks, cat’s eyes and studs have been installed to slow vehicles. Authorities have also said that bikes may be stopped from using the flyover during rain, with restrictions on cycles also possible.
The action followed reports of the incidents after roads in the city were painted ahead of the festival. The paint was removed from the bridge overnight. Special blocks, cat’s eyes and studs have since been placed on the flyover to control vehicle speed.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda said the section has a bend where vehicles can skid if they are moving at high speed. The speed-control measures were introduced because of that risk.
The role of the paint in the bikes’ skidding has not been conclusively established. According to the commissioner, anti-skid paint had been used on the flyover. Specialist engineers and officials from the concerned department have been directed to examine the cause of the accidents.
Authorities are also considering whether different colours could be creating a visibility problem for drivers. An alternative arrangement will be made if that is found to be an issue.
Bike movement on the Chingrighata flyover may be stopped when it rains in the coming days. A restriction on cycles using the flyover may also be imposed.
Officials have said that the Gariahat flyover does not have a sharp or risky bend, and therefore does not face the same difficulty.
