Zelenskyy Ukraine elections ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed organising elections if Russia agrees to a 60-day total ceasefire. Speaking to ABC News’s ‘This Week’, Zelenskyy said a ceasefire would create the conditions needed for an election. Ukraine’s legislation prohibits elections while martial law remains in force during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organise elections,” Zelenskyy said. He maintained that Ukraine would not accept unilateral concessions and said any arrangement would need credible security guarantees.
Hours earlier, Zelenskyy said Ukraine could stop attacks on Russian oil refineries if Russia stopped strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. “It’s possible to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as early as today, but Putin does not want to do so,” he said. Zelenskyy added that any agreement would require “real guarantees”.
US President Donald Trump has criticised Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries. Trump said Zelenskyy had “better damn well stop” the attacks and suggested that Ukraine needed a different leader. Zelenskyy responded: “The real cause of the war in Europe is Russia and Russia alone।”
Zelenskyy said he would continue discussions with European leaders on additional air-defence packages and ammunition for combat aircraft. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is due to attend an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday. Further sanctions against Russia and Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations are expected to be discussed at the meeting.
