Arvind Kejriwal SIR notice
Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has received a notice under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of Delhi’s electoral rolls.
Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal, their 25-year-old son Pulkit Kejriwal, and his parents Gobind Ram Kejriwal and Gita Devi have also received notices.
However, the notices do not mean that Kejriwal or his family members have already been removed from the voter list. They have been placed under the “Unmapped with Last SIR” category, which means their current records could not be mapped to the previous SIR records and require verification.
The Delhi Election Commission has issued notices to five members of the Kejriwal family.
Besides Arvind Kejriwal, the notices have been issued to Sunita Kejriwal, his father Gobind Ram Kejriwal, his mother Gita Devi and his 25-year-old son Pulkit Kejriwal.
All five are associated with the New Delhi Assembly constituency. They are among 110 people who have received notices in the specific part segment covering the constituency.
The notices require the concerned electors to undergo verification and provide the necessary information and documents to the election authorities.
The next step will depend on the outcome of that verification process.
Kejriwal had previously criticised the SIR exercise after more than 47 lakh names were not included in Delhi’s draft electoral roll.
He alleged that the exercise was being used to reduce the number of voters and claimed that opposition supporters were being targeted. These are political allegations made by Kejriwal, while the SIR process and the reasons for exclusions have also been the subject of responses and counterclaims from political opponents.
According to the Delhi draft electoral roll data, more than 47.56 lakh enumeration forms could not be collected or digitised out of around 1.45 crore existing electors. The election authorities said the category included electors who were absent, shifted, deceased or duplicated.
The omission of a name from the draft roll does not by itself mean permanent removal from the electoral roll. The SIR process provides a mechanism for claims and objections.
The “Unmapped with Last SIR” category refers to electors whose current details could not be matched with the corresponding records from the previous SIR exercise. Such cases are subject to verification.
At present, there is no information indicating that Kejriwal or his family members have been finally declared ineligible to vote.
The notices have nevertheless added another political dimension to Delhi’s ongoing SIR exercise. The AAP has viewed the notices in a political context, while the election authorities’ available information places the matter within the voter-record verification process.
The focus now shifts to the verification process and the status of the five family members in the final electoral roll.
