Guwahati Wife Murder
A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Guwahati for allegedly killing his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar. Police recovered her severed head from a refrigerator inside the couple’s rented apartment after neighbours alerted authorities over a foul smell.
The accused, Ramanuj Goswami, later surrendered to police and was arrested. A court has sent him to seven days of police custody.
The case took another disturbing turn on Tuesday when Goswami, while being taken to court, allegedly told reporters that he would kill the person he referred to as the “sugar daddy” after completing his prison sentence. He also claimed that he had no regret or apology for killing his wife.
The case came to light on September 6 after neighbours complained about a foul smell coming from the couple’s apartment in Guwahati’s Basisthapur area.
Residents also told police that they had not seen the newly married couple for around two days and that their phones were switched off.
Police subsequently entered the locked apartment and found Riya’s body. Investigators later recovered her severed head from inside a refrigerator, where it had reportedly been placed in a polythene bag. The remains were sent for post-mortem examination.
Riya and Goswami had married only a few months earlier and were living together in a rented apartment.
According to the police investigation, the couple frequently quarrelled. Police are also examining whether Goswami’s suspicion that his wife was involved in an extramarital relationship may have been a motive for the killing.
Investigators are working to establish the exact sequence of events surrounding the alleged murder and verify the accused’s statements against forensic evidence.
Goswami’s comments outside the court have added another dimension to the investigation.
When asked by reporters to identify the person he called the “sugar daddy”, the accused reportedly became angry. He subsequently said he had no regrets about killing his wife and would not apologise.
Police are now expected to establish who the alleged “sugar daddy” is and whether the person has any connection with Riya. The allegation remains part of the ongoing investigation and has not been independently established.
Goswami had reportedly remained away from the apartment after the alleged killing before surrendering to police late on Sunday.
Police have also recovered a sharp weapon from the crime scene, according to reports. Investigators are examining forensic evidence, the post-mortem findings and Goswami’s statements to reconstruct the incident and establish the motive.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police looking into the circumstances of Riya’s death and the claims made by the accused.
