Jitendra Kumar replaced Vikrant
Vikrant Massey’s portrayal of Bablu Pandit in the first season of Mirzapur remains memorable for fans of the franchise. So when Jitendra Kumar stepped into the role for Mirzapur: The Movie, one question immediately stood out: why was the character recast?
Director Gurmmeet Singh has now explained the creative thinking behind the change. According to the filmmaker, the decision was not simply about replacing one actor with another. Recasting Bablu allowed the team to approach the character and the story from a different creative perspective.
Singh explained that the creative process cannot always be tied to what has already been established in a series. While audiences naturally expect continuity, filmmakers also need the freedom to explore new possibilities.
Once the team decided to recast Bablu, Singh said it opened new doors for the film. The change allowed the makers to approach the story differently rather than simply attempting to recreate the exact version of the character seen in Season 1.
The director therefore sees Jitendra Kumar’s casting as more than a straightforward replacement for Massey. It became an opportunity to explore another dimension of a familiar character.
One of the biggest changes, according to Singh, is the way Bablu is portrayed in the film.
The director pointed out that the Season 1 version of Bablu did not have much personal agency or a clearly defined agenda. In the movie, however, the character has his own ambitions, plans and way of thinking.
Jitendra Kumar’s presence helped the filmmakers bring this new dimension to the screen. Singh praised the actor for approaching the character with confidence and effectively making the role his own.
The director expressed his gratitude to Kumar, saying that the actor’s involvement made the team comfortable and that the new interpretation worked extremely well.
Jitendra Kumar is joined by several members of the original Mirzapur cast, including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chaddha and Shweta Tripathi.
Ravi Kishan is among the new additions to the film.
Mirzapur: The Movie was released in theatres on September 4, 2026.
While Vikrant Massey’s absence naturally sparked curiosity among fans, Gurmmeet Singh’s explanation suggests that the recasting was closely connected to the filmmakers’ decision to give Bablu a somewhat different creative treatment.
For the makers, Jitendra Kumar is therefore not merely the actor who replaced Massey. He represents a new interpretation of Bablu Pandit within the Mirzapur universe.
