A major confrontation between the Trump administration and US news organisations has escalated after five leading television networks suspended (US Networks Boycott Trump Coverage) joint coverage of President Donald Trump.

ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC halted White House television pool coverage on Monday in protest against the administration’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.

The television pool system allows one broadcaster to cover presidential events and distribute the footage to other networks. CNN had been scheduled to handle the pool on Monday.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico Barred From White House

The Trump administration announced on Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House. On Saturday, journalists from the three organisations were denied entry and their press credentials were disabled.

The organisations said their journalists had lost access without notice or due process because the administration objected to their reporting.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico subsequently filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. They argued that the ban violates protections under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

The dispute has therefore moved beyond a disagreement between the president and individual media organisations and into a legal battle over White House press access.

Five Major Broadcasters Suspend Pool Coverage

With CNN prevented from carrying out its scheduled pool duties, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC declined to replace it.

The five broadcasters issued a joint statement saying the public has an important interest in receiving accurate and independent information about its government. They argued that an administration should not restrict a news organisation because it objects to the organisation’s reporting.

The decision affected coverage of Trump’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. His meetings with foreign leaders were not covered through the usual television pool.

The White House’s new helipad opening was also conducted without the normal professional television pool. The White House streamed the event itself, but Trump’s remarks were difficult to hear because the professional pool microphones were not available.

Trump Responds as White House Launches ‘Trump TV’

Trump responded forcefully to the media boycott. On Truth Social, he defended the White House decision and criticised what he described as ‘fake news’.

Trump said the administration was not attacking the free press but was acting against media organisations whose coverage he considers false.

Vice President JD Vance also defended the administration’s position. He said the affected organisations could continue reporting and exercising free speech but would no longer have the same access to offices inside the White House.

Amid the dispute, the White House launched a 24-hour streaming platform called ‘Trump TV’. The service features Trump’s speeches, remarks and other video content directly from the White House.

The legal battle is now a central part of the dispute. CNN, MS NOW and Politico are seeking to overturn the ban and defend their claimed constitutional protections.

The case could have broader implications for the relationship between the White House and the US news media, although the legal outcome remains to be determined.
