US President Donald Trump has announced a new security agreement involving the United States, Denmark and Greenland.
Trump said the deal would give Washington permanent control over Greenland’s security and allow the United States to expand its military presence on the Arctic island.

The full terms of the agreement have not yet been made public.
Denmark and Greenland have stressed that the arrangement will not compromise Greenland’s sovereignty or its right to self-determination.

US Plans to Expand Its Military Footprint

Trump said the United States would immediately begin the process of developing a larger military presence in Greenland.
The US already operates the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, an important facility for American space and strategic security operations.

Reports cited by NDTV have also discussed possible plans for three additional US military bases in southern Greenland.
However, the exact scale of any new deployment under the latest agreement remains unclear.

The United States already has extensive military rights in Greenland under a 1951 defence agreement with Denmark, which was updated in 2004.
The key question is how far the new arrangement expands those existing rights.

Russia and China Are Central to the Security Debate

The strategic importance of Greenland has grown as competition over the Arctic intensifies.
Washington has repeatedly raised concerns about Russia and China establishing a military or economic foothold on the island.

Trump said the agreement would prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases or a military presence in Greenland without US approval.
The US administration has also said that mechanisms would be put in place to restrict sensitive foreign investment.

Reuters reported that the agreement would allow the United States to expand its military presence while preventing US adversaries from establishing bases on the island.

Greenland’s strategic value extends beyond military considerations.
Its location between North America and Europe, Arctic sea routes and mineral resources have made it increasingly important in the geopolitical competition surrounding the region.

Denmark and Greenland Say Sovereignty Remains Intact

Trump’s description of the agreement as giving the US “permanent control” over security has raised questions about Greenland’s sovereignty.
Denmark has said that its sovereignty over Greenland will not be compromised.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has also said that the agreement strengthens the territory’s security.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as Greenland’s right to self-determination.

Important details, however, remain unresolved.
The scale of the planned US military buildup has not been disclosed.
It is also unclear whether Washington would receive any formal authority over foreign policy or natural resources.

The agreement is expected to be formally signed in New York during the UN General Assembly next week.
It will also need to go through parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland.

The development marks a significant shift in the Greenland dispute, which had previously centred on Trump’s repeated calls for the United States to acquire the territory.
The precise impact of the new arrangement will become clearer once its full terms are released.
