Saudi Arabia Israel intelligence Houthis
Saudi Arabia is facing increasing pressure from Houthi forces (Saudi Arabia Israel intelligence Houthis : Saudi Arabia reportedly seeks Israeli intelligence support against Houthis as Pakistan holds back.) as the conflict around Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait intensifies.
At the same time, Pakistan’s position on direct military intervention has emerged as a key issue. Despite being part of the newly established Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, Pakistan has reportedly not committed to sending military assets into Yemen to fight the Houthis.
Against this backdrop, Saudi Arabia has reportedly reached out to Israel for intelligence assistance through US Central Command, or CENTCOM.
The development is notable because Saudi Arabia does not formally recognise Israel and the two countries do not maintain diplomatic relations.
The Houthis have intensified their activities along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and have threatened shipping around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to reports.
The strategic waterway is a major international shipping route. Any prolonged disruption could affect Saudi Arabia’s energy exports as well as wider global trade.
The Houthis have reportedly launched missile and drone attacks against Saudi targets, including cities and energy infrastructure. Saudi and Yemeni forces have responded with strikes against Houthi positions.
The escalation has therefore created both security and economic pressure on Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye recently signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had earlier warned that the agreement could become operational if Saudi Arabia came under attack.
However, Pakistan subsequently clarified that no military response under the agreement was currently being discussed.
According to the report cited by Economic Times, Islamabad has distinguished between defending Saudi territory and conducting combat operations on foreign soil.
Pakistan has continued to express solidarity with Saudi Arabia, but its reported reluctance to deploy forces into Yemen has raised questions about how the new defence agreement would operate in the current crisis.
According to the Economic Times report, citing the Jerusalem Post, Saudi Arabia has indirectly approached Israel for intelligence support against the Houthis through CENTCOM.
The reported discussions are focused on intelligence that could help Riyadh track Houthi military deployments and assess potential operations.
The reported contact is significant because Saudi Arabia and Israel have no formal diplomatic relations.
Saudi Arabia is also reportedly seeking assistance from other international partners. The Economic Times report says Riyadh has sought British assistance relating to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the protection of its energy infrastructure.
The developments highlight the widening search for security partners as Saudi Arabia faces increasing pressure from the Houthis.
