Rejinagar bypoll
After polling ended in the Rejinagar by-election, Nawada MLA Humayun Kabir called his son and Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Gholam Nabi Azad, also known as Robin, a “traitor”. Kabir alleged that his son had asked party workers to leave the booths after he was detained during voting on Tuesday.
Shortly after polling began on Tuesday, Kabir accused the state police of rigging the election. He was detained following an argument with the police and was released in the evening, after voting had ended. He spoke again at the party office in Rejinagar on Wednesday morning and later attacked his son.
Kabir alleged that Azad had told party workers to leave the booths after his detention. He said he had fielded his son from the Rejinagar seat he had vacated because he feared that someone else could win and later switch parties.
Gholam said his father had been mentally distressed after being harassed by the police. He attributed Kabir’s remarks to frustration and hurt. Gholam said he did not want himself or any party worker to be harmed in the electoral contest.
Kabir accused his son of politically surrendering and also called him cowardly. He levelled allegations against the chief minister, the BJP and the police, and said he was considering leaving politics.
Rejinagar BJP candidate Shakharav Sarkar described Kabir’s remarks as a “drama” aimed at gaining sympathy. Sarkar claimed that Kabir was adept at acting according to the situation and was seeking sympathy after realising that defeat was certain.
Kabir had contested the Assembly election from both Rejinagar and Nawda and won both seats. His margin in Rejinagar was around 58,000 votes. After becoming the Nawda MLA, he had challenged the BJP to win the Rejinagar by-election. Before the result, however, both Humayun and Gholam gave up hope of winning in Rejinagar. The report mentioned October 9 as the date for the result.
