Oneindia journalist Richa Parashar has alleged that Rahul Gandhi grabbed and pulled her during an Opposition protest at the Supreme Court premises, causing her to fall. Parashar, who said she is three months pregnant, was on assignment to seek a soundbite from Gandhi. She later said she was admitted to a hospital in Delhi.

Journalist’s account

Parashar alleged that Gandhi first grabbed and yanked her hand, after which she fell on the steps at the Supreme Court entrance. She further claimed that her cameraman was pushed and fell on top of her. According to her account, four or five others fell amid the ensuing chaos.

She said her phone was shattered and her microphone receiver was dislodged. “Rahul Gandhi grabbed me first… and since my cameraperson was recording, he immediately shoved him as well,” she said. Parashar added that she fell on her knees and stomach and felt she could not breathe for some time.

Congress disputes allegation

Congress denied that the incident took place and described the allegation as BJP propaganda. Congress leaders and supporters said videos posted or shared by the journalist, party leaders and supporters did not clearly show Gandhi pushing her.

Congress leader Alka Lamba referred to the alleged incident as having taken place between 3 pm and 4 pm and questioned Parashar’s account of going to hospital at 8.30 pm.

Context of the protest

The INDIA bloc held the protest seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The bloc had shifted from focusing only on the election commissioner to a wider “democratic protest”. After the protest ended, Gandhi thanked participants and described the day as “a powerful demonstration that the people of India will not be intimidated.”

BJP leaders visited Parashar in hospital. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused Congress workers of not helping her and said Gandhi, who speaks of “smashing the patriarchy”, had behaved like a goon. The report also said that at least 20,000 paramilitary personnel were deployed in the national capital amid tight security.
