drone attacks off Oman
Two oil tankers flying the flags of Nicaragua and the Marshall Islands were allegedly targeted in extensive drone attacks off the coast of Oman. Indian sailors Veer Bahadur Yadav and Amit Singh have been missing since the attacks, and the Omani Coast Guard has launched a search for them.
Each of the two vessels had 11 Indian sailors on board. Yadav and Singh have been missing after the alleged attacks on Sunday, when the ships were anchored off the Omani coast.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the alleged attacks in a statement issued on Monday. The ministry said the safety of Indian sailors was the government’s highest priority.
India called for freedom of navigation on international waterways and urged the relevant authorities to act in accordance with international law. It also called for the resolution of all issues through dialogue and diplomacy.
According to the ministry, repeated attacks on commercial vessels could worsen the situation in the area around the Strait of Hormuz. The statement referred to heightened tensions in the strait since a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran last February.
Earlier, on October 9, a Panama-flagged vessel near the Omani coast was reportedly subjected to a similar drone attack. The 22 Indian nationals on board that vessel were safe.
