Bangladeshi student leader Nahid Islam has expressed solidarity with India’s youth and democratic forces while supporting protesters in Delhi. In a statement dated 10 October 2026 and described as issued from Dhaka, he backed demands for electoral accountability, democratic rights and the right to peaceful assembly.

Call for release of detainees

In a message posted on his X handle, Nahid called for information about detained student leaders, protesters and journalists to be made public. He also urged the release of those detained and disclosure of the reasons for their detention. The statement called for journalists to be allowed to work independently.

Reference to Jantar Mantar restrictions

The statement raised concerns about restrictions at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and the detention of peaceful protesters. It also referred to Shaheen Bagh, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jadavpur University while expressing solidarity with India’s youth and democratic forces. According to Nahid’s statement, the protesters are demanding electoral accountability and democratic rights.

Link to Bangladesh’s July 2024 movement

The statement linked the movement in India with Bangladesh’s student-led movement of July 2024. It opposed religious majoritarianism, authoritarianism, communal hatred and political intolerance. “This struggle is not yours alone,” Nahid wrote, adding, “Our struggles are interconnected.”

The statement said the July 2024 movement grew into a nationwide uprising against 15 years of authoritarian rule. It referred to “up to 1,400” deaths as a subsequent United Nations estimate. Claims concerning the situation in India and the status of detainees were presented as part of Nahid’s statement.
