IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode
The death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode has triggered questions on campus after his mother alleged that her son had been harassed. She has demanded justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Mumbai Police have registered a case of abetment of suicide based on a complaint filed by Sahil’s father. Police said several people were named in the complaint and their alleged roles are being investigated.
Sahil was a second-year student in IIT Bombay’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering. According to the institute, he was found using a mobile phone during an examination on Friday.
IIT Bombay said Sahil had uploaded the examination question paper to ChatGPT in an attempt to obtain answers. The matter was subsequently discussed with him by the instructor and the Head of the Department.
The institute said Sahil was counselled and assured that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career. IIT Bombay also stated that no disciplinary action had been initiated against him.
Sahil later returned to his hostel room. His hostel mates became concerned after they were unable to contact him and alerted the authorities. He was later found dead in his room.
Sahil’s mother has alleged that her son was harassed and has sought justice. The family has called for an investigation into what happened before his death.
Based on a complaint filed by Sahil’s father, Mumbai Police registered an abetment-of-suicide case. Police said the complaint named several individuals and that their alleged roles would be investigated.
IIT Bombay, however, has maintained that no disciplinary action had been initiated against Sahil. The institute said that the instructor and the department head had spoken to him and assured him that the examination incident would not affect his academic career.
The difference between the family’s allegations and the institute’s account is now part of the broader investigation.
Sahil’s death led to protests by students on the IIT Bombay campus. Students demanded transparency, accountability and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
More than 400 students participated in the protest. Some protesting students alleged that Sahil had faced the prospect of a one-year suspension after the examination incident. IIT Bombay has disputed that account, maintaining that no disciplinary action was initiated.
The police investigation is continuing, with authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
Sahil’s death is the third reported student suicide at IIT Bombay’s Powai campus in seven months. The incident has renewed discussion around student welfare, mental-health support and institutional accountability on campus.
