Ahead of the festive season, the Centre has announced a major relaxation in the LPG refill booking rules for rural households. The minimum interval between two domestic LPG refill bookings in rural areas has been reduced from 45 days to 25 days.

The revised rule brings rural consumers on par with their urban counterparts, who were already allowed to book LPG refills at a 25-day interval. The government has directed oil marketing companies to implement the revised rule with immediate effect.

Why Has the Government Reduced the Booking Gap?

The 45-day restriction for rural consumers was introduced when LPG supplies came under pressure following the conflict in West Asia. The longer booking interval was intended to help manage supplies during a period of heightened pressure on the fuel distribution network.

According to the government, the LPG supply situation has now improved considerably. The backlog of consumers waiting for refills has also declined, allowing the Centre to relax the earlier restriction.

The change is expected to be particularly useful for households with higher LPG consumption. During festivals, weddings and other family events, cooking gas consumption often rises, and rural consumers will no longer have to wait 45 days before booking their next refill.

One Rule for Rural and Urban Consumers

With the latest decision, the distinction between rural and urban LPG consumers in terms of refill booking intervals has effectively been removed. All domestic LPG consumers can now book their next refill after a gap of 25 days.

The government expects the move to improve access to LPG and make the distribution system more responsive to consumer demand, particularly during periods of higher household consumption.

What Is the LPG Price in Kolkata?

The price of domestic LPG has not been increased in September. According to IndianOil, a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder currently costs ₹968 in Kolkata, with the rate unchanged since June 7, 2026.

However, commercial LPG became more expensive from September 1. The price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder in Kolkata is now ₹2,884, up from ₹2,872.50. Delhi’s rate is ₹2,747.50, while Chennai’s is ₹2,916.50.

For household consumers, therefore, the latest development is primarily a relaxation of the booking rule rather than a reduction in the price of LPG.
