Kolkata civic polls TMC candidates
The Trinamool Congress is facing concerns over its organisational position and the selection of candidates for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls, according to claims cited in political circles. The civic election is expected to be held after Puja. The BJP is also preparing for the Kolkata contest and is working on its candidate list.
The number of Kolkata Municipal Corporation wards has increased from 144 to 209. Sources have claimed that more than 100 Trinamool councillors resigned after the Assembly election. It has also been indicated that the party may need to field new candidates in nearly 90% of the wards.
According to Trinamool sources in Kalighat, the process of selecting candidates has begun in wards where the party remains organisationally active. In the earlier arrangement, Trinamool controlled 134 of the 144 wards, while the BJP held three.
The concerns have been linked, according to the claims, to the Assembly election defeat, allegations of attacks and arrests involving Trinamool workers, the closure of several party offices and workers being forced to leave their areas. The issue of defections from the party has also been raised.
Trinamool had control of 15 Assembly constituencies and four Lok Sabha constituencies in Kolkata, according to the information cited. Five years ago, Trinamool received around 1.9 million votes, while the BJP received 241,000 votes.
The BJP is preparing to contest for control of Kolkata and is working on its candidate list, according to the claims. Trinamool has said it is ready if the Left parties want an alliance. Political circles, however, believe the possibility of such an alliance is currently low.
