JNU professor sexual harassment
A professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi is facing allegations of sexual harassment, with 11 students approaching the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), according to a report.
The students have allegedly accused the professor of making sexually suggestive remarks during viva examinations and offering higher marks in exchange for sexual favours. The ICC has begun proceedings and has asked students to record their statements.
The allegations gained momentum after a student shared her experience in a students-only WhatsApp group following viva examinations held in the first week of May.
Other students subsequently came forward with similar accounts. Sources said the professor allegedly made comments with sexual overtones during the viva and suggested that students could receive additional marks if they accepted his advances.
The allegations are not limited to the viva examinations. Some students have also alleged that the professor invited them to gatherings at his residence on the JNU campus, where he allegedly made inappropriate advances.
Other complaints reportedly accuse him of making lewd or inappropriate comments during classes. More students, including senior students, later came forward with similar allegations.
Following the complaints, JNU’s Internal Complaints Committee began its proceedings and called students to record their statements.
The university went into a semester break of around 45 days soon after the complaint was filed. When classes resumed in July, the issue reportedly resurfaced on campus.
The ICC has declined to comment publicly, describing the complaint as an internal matter currently under investigation. The JNU administration has also not issued a detailed public response to the allegations.
The allegations against the professor are currently under investigation and have not been established as proven offences. The findings of the ICC inquiry are expected to determine the next course of action.
The latest case comes against the backdrop of an earlier sexual harassment matter at JNU. In April 2025, the university’s Executive Council dismissed four employees in separate cases, including senior School of International Studies professor Swaran Singh, who had faced allegations of sexual harassment.
