Imran Khan sister Aleema Khan detained
Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been detained in Lahore ahead of a planned protest by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Aleema was detained for 30 days under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960 and transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail. The detention order was issued by Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz.
Aleema Khan was detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. The law allows authorities to detain individuals considered a threat to public peace and order.
The Lahore administration’s order directed that Aleema be detained for 30 days. The order cited concerns related to public safety and the maintenance of law and order.
She was subsequently transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.
The detention comes days before PTI’s planned September 27 protest and march towards Islamabad.
The party has called for the protest to demand Imran Khan’s release from prison. PTI has said its planned mobilisation will be peaceful.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan condemned Aleema’s detention and said such actions could increase tension.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had earlier said that the government would take necessary measures to prevent the planned protest march.
PTI leaders have strongly objected to Aleema Khan’s detention. Party representatives and members of her family initially said she had been taken away after leaving her residence.
Her sister Noreen Niazi said Aleema was taken into custody while leaving home. The family later learned that her vehicle had been taken to a police station.
PTI members described the incident as an unlawful detention and demanded that Aleema’s whereabouts and legal status be made clear.
The administration, however, has formally cited public safety and law-and-order concerns as the basis for the 30-day detention.
People detained under the relevant public-order provisions can challenge the detention in the High Court and can also make a representation to the provincial government.
Imran Khan has been in prison since 2023 and faces multiple legal cases. PTI’s planned September 27 mobilisation is centred on his release.
Aleema Khan’s detention has therefore become a significant development ahead of the planned protest. Attention is now focused on how the authorities and PTI respond as September 27 approaches.
