Oracle layoffs 2026
Oracle has begun another round of layoffs as the technology giant continues to restructure its workforce while spending billions of dollars on artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
Oracle has begun another round of layoffs, giving affected employees a sudden shock on Monday, September 14.
According to reports, several employees received termination emails at around 6 AM. The message informed them that their roles had been eliminated as part of a broader organisational change.
The email also stated that the day on which the employee received the notification would be their final working day. Reports also indicated that access to Oracle’s internal systems was disabled for some employees before the formal notification arrived.
Access to computers, email, voicemail and company files was also set to be deactivated. The process therefore left some employees without access to company systems before they formally received the termination communication.
Oracle has not publicly disclosed the total number of employees affected by the latest round. Estimates of between 7,000 and 10,000 job cuts have circulated, but those figures remain unconfirmed.
The latest layoffs come after a major reduction in Oracle’s workforce during fiscal 2026.
According to company filings, Oracle’s employee count fell by around 21,000, or approximately 13%, during the fiscal year ended May 31, 2026.
The company had around 141,000 employees at the end of May, compared with roughly 162,000 a year earlier.
The latest round is reportedly affecting multiple departments. An internal document indicated that some teams could face workforce reductions of more than 10%.
Oracle is also facing rising restructuring costs. The company has disclosed an additional $700 million in restructuring expenses, taking the estimated cost of its fiscal 2026 restructuring programme to around $2.8 billion.
The biggest question surrounding Oracle’s latest layoffs is why the company is cutting jobs while dramatically increasing its investment in Artificial Intelligence.
Oracle reported capital expenditure of $28.5 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. That compares with $8.5 billion during the same period a year earlier.
The company has maintained its fiscal 2027 capital expenditure forecast at between $90 billion and $95 billion. Much of the spending is linked to expanding data-centre capacity and meeting rising demand for AI computing.
Oracle is also taking on significant debt to finance its data-centre expansion. That creates additional pressure to control payroll and other operating expenses.
The broader technology industry is undergoing a major workforce transformation as companies adopt AI and automation. Some jobs are being automated, while companies are also redesigning teams and restructuring their workforce.
Oracle’s latest layoffs highlight that contradiction clearly. Technology companies are investing unprecedented amounts in AI infrastructure while simultaneously reassessing the size and cost of their human workforce.
