Pakistan women’s captain Fatima Sana has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee and handed a demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s Asia Cup clash against India in Dubai.

The International Cricket Council found Sana guilty of a Level 1 breach of Article 2.5, which relates to using language, actions or gestures that disparage a batter or could provoke an aggressive reaction following a dismissal.

Pavilion gesture after dismissing Shafali

The incident took place during the second over of India’s chase. Sana dismissed opener Shafali Verma after the Indian batter chipped the ball back towards the bowler, with Sana completing the catch herself.

After taking the wicket, the Pakistan captain gestured towards the pavilion, effectively signalling Shafali to leave the field. The gesture attracted the attention of the match officials and led to the disciplinary charge.

Sana admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC match referee Supriya Rani Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing.

Second demerit point in 24 months

The latest sanction means Sana now has two demerit points on her disciplinary record within a 24-month period.

Her previous demerit point came during a T20I match against Ireland in Dublin on August 6, 2025.

Under the ICC’s disciplinary system, four or more demerit points accumulated within 24 months are converted into suspension points. Two suspension points can result in a ban from one Test or two ODIs or T20Is, depending on which format comes first for the player.

Three wickets but a heavy defeat for Pakistan

Sana was nevertheless Pakistan’s most successful bowler in the India match, taking three wickets, including the dismissal of Shafali.

But her team’s batting collapse proved decisive. Pakistan were bowled out for just 55, before India chased down the target for a seven-wicket victory.

The punishment therefore came despite Sana’s strong individual bowling performance. Her three wickets could not prevent Pakistan from suffering a comprehensive defeat, while her send-off to Shafali resulted in disciplinary action from the ICC after the match.
