The Union government has approved a major change in the Employees’ Provident Fund framework by raising the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

The move is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory EPFO coverage, particularly those earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 a month.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the estimated annual government expenditure on the measure would be around ₹11,339 crore. He described the move as a long-standing demand that has now been approved by the Cabinet.

EPFO Ceiling Revised After 12 Years

The EPFO wage ceiling was last increased to ₹15,000 in September 2014. It had remained unchanged for the previous decade, from 2004 to 2014.

The government said the latest revision is intended to reflect sustained wage growth, rising incomes and the expansion of formal employment over the intervening years.

The revised ceiling will expand mandatory EPFO coverage to employees in the ₹15,000–₹25,000 monthly wage bracket.

Could Your Monthly PF Deduction Increase?

The financial impact on individual employees will depend on how the revised ceiling is implemented.

Under the existing ₹15,000 ceiling, a 12% employee contribution works out to a maximum mandatory contribution of ₹1,800 per month.

If the same 12% rate is applied to the new ₹25,000 ceiling, the employee contribution could rise to ₹3,000 per month. That would represent a potential increase of ₹1,200 per month, or ₹14,400 a year.

However, the actual impact on take-home salary will depend on the implementation framework and how individual employers calculate PF contributions. Therefore, ₹3,000 should not automatically be treated as the fixed deduction for every employee.

A higher contribution could, however, also increase the employee’s long-term retirement corpus.

Over 51 Lakh More Employees Could Come Under EPFO

The government estimates that more than 51 lakh additional employees could enter mandatory EPFO coverage following the wage ceiling revision.

The wider coverage is expected to expand access not only to provident fund savings but also to pension protection under the Employees’ Pension Scheme and insurance protection under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme.

The government estimates annual expenditure of about ₹11,339 crore on the measure. The five-year estimated expenditure has been reported at around ₹56,696 crore.
