East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan
East Bengal’s young brigade produced one of the standout performances of the Calcutta Football League season as they held a star-studded Mohun Bagan side to a 1-1 draw in the Kolkata Derby at Barasat Stadium on Monday.
While the result did little to alter the league equation, the performance was significant for East Bengal. The Red and Gold side largely relied on reserve-team youngsters, whereas Mohun Bagan fielded several experienced first-team players.
Mohun Bagan dominated much of the opening half and eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute.
Manvir Singh capitalised on a defensive lapse and the positioning of East Bengal goalkeeper Gourab Shaw to put the Mariners 1-0 ahead. East Bengal struggled to create clear opportunities before the break, while Mohun Bagan went into half-time with the lead.
With players such as Manvir Singh, Subhasish Bose, Rahul Bheke, Apuia and Sahal Abdul Samad in the starting XI, Mohun Bagan had considerably more experience on the pitch.
The second half, however, belonged largely to East Bengal.
The young Red and Gold players returned with far greater attacking intent and began creating repeated chances. Their pressure eventually produced the equaliser in the 64th minute.
Mohammad Bilal, introduced as a substitute, rose highest to meet a corner and headed the ball past the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
East Bengal continued to look dangerous after the equaliser, while Mohun Bagan also searched for a winner. Neither side could find the decisive goal, however, and the points were shared.
Both teams had already secured their places in the Super Six stage, but the draw was still an important result for East Bengal. The club finished the group stage unbeaten and topped Group 1 with 27 points from 11 matches.
For East Bengal, the biggest takeaway was the performance of players such as Ankan Bhattacharjee, Tanmay and Chaku, along with the pace and attacking threat provided by Akash Hembram. Their display against a much more experienced Mohun Bagan side could strengthen their case for opportunities with the senior squad.
For Mohun Bagan, the result is likely to prompt questions about fitness, attacking efficiency and the team’s ability to impose itself against an inexperienced opposition.
The league equation may not have changed dramatically, but the derby offered both clubs plenty to think about ahead of the Super Six stage.
