Rahul Gandhi regime change remarks
The BJP has targeted Rahul Gandhi and his political ecosystem after AISA president Neha Bora and lawyer Prashant Bhushan referred to Bangladesh’s 2024 student movement and spoke about “regime change”. The party alleged that the remarks reflected Gandhi’s views and indicated an attempt to create “Bangladesh-like anarchy” in India.
Bora made the remarks while virtually addressing a Socialist Students’ Front conference. She credited Bangladesh’s Gen Z movement with inspiring mobilisation among young people in India around democracy and voting rights.
“We know that the Gen Z movement that we are seeing in India first started in Bangladesh. Congratulations to you for showing us the way,” Bora said. She also expressed solidarity with Bangladesh’s student movement and said India and Bangladesh were fighting for democratic and voter rights.
At a joint press conference, Bhushan said, “There will definitely be a regime change. We all want a regime change. Is there anything wrong with that?” The source said Bhushan made the remark on Thursday, a day after Bora’s comments.
The statements came amid recent protests over SIR and Rahul Gandhi’s street protests over alleged irregularities in the exercise. Bora and Bhushan attended those protests. Bora was also described as a regular participant in INDIA bloc meetings.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari called the remarks an “open admission of regime change”. He said Rahul Gandhi and his associates were a threat to Indian democracy. Bhandari also said Gandhi had made Bora his “poster girl”, arguing that her views aligned with Gandhi’s thoughts.
BJP IT Cell chief Deepak Mhaskey said the comments indicated an attempt to create chaos and promote mob rule. Congress leader Rashid Alvi accused the BJP of invoking democracy to suppress the voices of young protesters. According to the source, Rahul Gandhi and Neha Bora had not reacted to the BJP’s allegations.
